Thesis Concert: minimalism
To fulfill my thesis requirements at Mills College I will perform a concert on November 15th at 7pm in the Littlefield Performance Hall at Mills (5000 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland). The concert will be a collection of minimalist works dating from the 1960’s to 2009. Other performers will be dancer, Molissa Fenley (http://www.molissafenley.com/), The Mills Minimalist Ensembles, Mills Chorus, Zach Kurth-Nelson (narration), Emily Packard (violin) and pianists Anthony Porter, Keisuke Nakagoshi, Lucy Moore, and with video art by Zach Kurth-Nelson and Katrina Schaffer.
Most minimalist pieces are not written with traditional Western classical structure (sections of the piece; ie. beginning, middle, end; and how they are arranged) where it is set and the meaning of the piece is dependent on it. In a lot of minimalism, especially early works, the structure is not that important because often it can be changed arbitrarily without changing the purpose/meaning/sound of the piece. This concert will uphold this characteristic and be a constant flow of music. Audience members are encouraged to come and go as they need/want to. Refreshments will be served in the lobby throughout the concert.
Below is an approximate schedule of when pieces will be performed so if there is a specific piece you would like to hear and can’t stay for the whole show you know when to come.
